Crackdown on Metal Theft Hits Essex Hard
Essex police have launched a full-on assault against metal thieves, targeting scrap yards, vehicle dismantlers, and hotspots across the county. From 12 to 16 October, the Rural Engagement Team and Community Policing Teams swung into action, backed by British Transport Police, to smash metal theft crime.
25 Scrap Yards and More Under the Microscope
- Visited 25 scrap metal dealers and 10 vehicle dismantlers
- Conducted roadside vehicle checks, snaring suspects on the spot
- Partnered with Border Force at Harwich Port, stopping over 200 vehicles
- Joined forces with Southend and Maldon councils to clamp down on illegal waste carrier licences

“The week of action is part of our continued effort to raise awareness within our communities and to help target criminal activity around this crime type nationally. Metal theft can hit heritage sites, telecoms, transport, power—and wreck businesses and the communities they serve.”
Officers also arrested a 24-year-old man in Harlow during a vehicle stop on 12 October. He faces charges of possession of an offensive weapon.
