Hero Postman Finds Abandoned Newborn Wrapped in Blanket
Police in East London are urgently trying to reach the mother of a baby boy found abandoned over the weekend. The incredible discovery came thanks to postman Edward Holton, 36, who stumbled upon the newborn while on his morning rounds in Hackney.
From Mail Delivery to Baby Rescue
Edward, delivering to a vicarage on Sandringham Road, spotted a strange bundle lying on the basement steps. “I saw a blanket shaped like a cocoon,” he recalls. “There was no sound or movement, but something didn’t feel right.”
He asked his colleague Paul Smith to turn the van around and check the bundle again. What they uncovered left them shocked – a tiny baby wrapped inside.
Quick Thinking Saves Baby’s Life
“Paul wrapped the baby up tight and warmed him in the van while I alerted the people in the vicarage,” Edward said. Emergency services arrived swiftly and took the baby into care.
Relief came when police later confirmed the baby, less than a day old, was healthy and thriving. “Hospital staff even asked for my name and named the baby Edward after me,” he said.
Community Rallies Around Baby Edward
Edward’s union colleague, Vinnie Micallef of East London Postal, praised the pair. “We’re over the moon baby Edward is OK. Edward and Paul did a brilliant job.”
Now, local Royal Mail workers are considering a fundraiser to support the baby’s future and hope the mother comes forward for help. “It worries me thinking what her situation must have been,” Edward added.
