St Helens Man Locked Up for Setting Ex’s Home and Car on Fire

Christopher Lane Jailed for 10 Years

Christopher Lane, 30, has been slammed with a decade behind bars for a terrifying domestic arson attack in St Helens. The no-fixed-abode offender, linked to Whiston, was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, January 11, 2021.

Lane’s rampage came after his ex-girlfriend tried to end their brief relationship.

Early Morning Blaze Leaves Victim Terrified

Just after 4am on May 18, 2020, emergency crews raced to a home in Clock Face after Lane deliberately set fire to a car and the house’s front door. Although no one was physically injured, the victim – inside with her two young children – was left devastated. The blaze destroyed the vehicle and damaged the front door which Lane had set ablaze, trapping the family inside.

Threats had been made previously against the victim, escalating the fear and trauma.

Lane Caught and Charged with Multiple Offences

Police tracked Lane down in Warrington and arrested him. He faced charges of arson with intent to endanger life, witness intimidation, and possession of cannabis. Lane first pleaded not guilty, dragging out the victim’s torment before changing his plea on day two of the trial.

Detective Praises Victim’s Courage

“This was an appalling incident which left the victim deeply traumatised,” said Detective Constable Lesley Prendergast. “Setting the front door alight to prevent escape was beyond belief, especially with young children inside. Thankfully, no one was physically harmed, but the psychological scars remain.”

“Lane’s initial denial only prolonged her suffering. We thank the victim for her bravery and patience. We hope this sentence brings some comfort as she rebuilds her life.”
