Three Men Jailed Over Terrifying Early Morning Ipswich Knife Robbery
At around 5:45am on Saturday 13 June last year, three thugs stormed a home on Neath Drive, Ipswich. They forced their way inside, waking the lone occupant—a man in his 60s. Armed with a knife, they threatened to pour boiling water over him if he didn’t hand over his bank card PIN. The burglars stole the card, cash, and precious jewellery before fleeing.
Minutes later, the victim’s stolen bank card was used to withdraw cash at a nearby cashpoint. Thankfully, the man was physically unharmed but left deeply shaken by the ordeal.
Quick Police Work Nabs the Trio
Ipswich police acted fast, arresting 36-year-old Daniel Tovey of Marigold Avenue, 37-year-old Glynn Davis of Springhurst Close, and 48-year-old William Hutchinson of Norwich Road—all on the same day. They were taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre and charged the following day.
Forensic teams provided crucial evidence that slammed the brakes on the trio’s claims. Footwear impressions, fingerprints, and DNA on the threatening knife linked all three men to the scene. Phone records further cemented their involvement, leaving no doubt they were responsible.
Sentenced for Brutal Home Invasion
At Ipswich Crown Court on Monday 24 May 2021, all three pleaded guilty to burglary. Davis and Hutchinson were both handed six years behind bars. Tovey received five years and five months.
Victim’s Trauma Highlighted by Detectives
“This was an extremely alarming and frightening experience for the victim, who lives alone, is vulnerable, and has disabilities,” said DC Leia Dowsing from the Serious Crime Disruption Team.
“One offender stayed downstairs with the victim, while the other two ransacked rooms upstairs. They pulled several sentimental items from the victim’s fingers—including two gold rings belonging to his late mother and wife. Thankfully, some items were recovered, including those precious rings.”
“The courage shown by the victim and witness support helped secure the guilty pleas in this ugly case.”
