Ex-Cop Caught in Shocking Abuse Scandal

Former sergeant Stephen Kirkpatrick, 36, faced Guildford Crown Court on Monday 24 May after being charged with having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a domestic abuse victim. He was the investigating officer for the case, working from Guildford police station before quitting the force in September 2020.

Police Probe Sparks Scandal

Surrey Police handed the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct back in January 2020 as soon as the allegations surfaced. Kirkpatrick has since pleaded guilty and is due for sentencing on 15 July at Guildford Crown Court.

Senior Police Slam Ex-Officer’s Conduct

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Alison Barlow didn’t hold back, stating:

“An officer engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a victim of domestic abuse is utterly appalling and a complete breach of the trust that the public rightly places in police officers. If officers breach that trust, then they will be investigated and will have to face the consequences of their actions.”

She added that Kirkpatrick’s behaviour threatens public confidence but doesn’t reflect the dedication of Surrey Police staff who protect vulnerable people daily.

Gross Misconduct Proceedings Pending

After sentencing, Kirkpatrick will face internal misconduct hearings over the case. Surrey Police emphasised a zero-tolerance approach to such breaches of trust.
