Golf Club Attack: Manslaughter Sentences Handed Down in Doncaster Court

Sean Holt, 45, and Richard Ferrie, 46, faced justice today at Doncaster Crown Court for a brutal attack that ended in tragedy. Originally charged with murder, the accusations were downgraded during the trial. Holt admitted manslaughter and was sentenced to six years behind bars, while Ferrie pleaded guilty to affray, receiving an 18-month sentence.

Violent Assault on Longley Hall Road

  • The incident happened on 15 May 2020 after a dispute between the defendants and victims Paul Crossley and Steven Newton.
  • After walking away from the initial confrontation, Holt and Ferrie armed themselves with golf clubs and tracked down their victims.
  • At around 9.45pm on Longley Hall Road, Holt punched Mr Crossley in the face, knocking him out and onto the road.
  • Ferrie then attacked Mr Newton with a golf club, continuing to hit him even after he was down.

Tragic Death and Forensic Evidence

Mr Crossley suffered a fractured skull, fractured eye socket, broken jaw, and damage to his larynx. He was rushed to Northern General Hospital but fell into a coma and died four days later.

Ferrie was caught discarding a blood-stained dark top near the scene, and DNA evidence linked the clothing to the attack.

Detective Chief Inspector James Axe said: “One blow caused Mr Crossley to hit his head on the road, resulting in un-survivable brain damage. This sentence sends a strong message that violence will not be tolerated on our streets.”

Justice for the Victim

Holt admitted that his single punch caused Mr Crossley’s death, while Ferrie played an assisting role in the savage attack.

The victim’s family requested privacy to grieve following the court proceedings and will not be making further comments.

DCI Axe added: “A man has been lost in horrific circumstances caused by one punch. We hope today’s verdict brings some measure of justice to the family, though we know nothing can fill the void left behind.”
