Tributes Flood In After 92-Year-Old George Ridges Dies in Car Park Incident
George Ridges, aged 92, tragically passed away following an incident involving a car in a High Road car park just after 1.45pm on 6 February.
A Life Full of Passion and Skills
In a heartfelt statement, George’s family shared touching memories. “George had extraordinary knowledge and love of woodwork, crafting all the furniture in their first home after marrying Sheila. He had green fingers and grew their own vegetables,” they said.
“Back in the late 1970s, George brewed his own wine, developed his own photographs, and enjoyed tackling word searches. He and Sheila loved dancing, hitting the floor at least five times a week. He was unconventional, unpredictable, often hilarious, and we were lucky to witness some incredible times with him!”
Barber of Tilbury – A Local Legend
George began his barbering career in Tilbury 58 years ago. His family recalled, “He met many interesting characters throughout his career and knew every aspect of the business, starting at only 20 years old. No one worked harder than George.”
“You always knew when George was in the barbershop – his jokes and booming laugh filled the place. He was the life and soul, with talent, kindness, skill, and intelligence. Everyone who knew him will remember him fondly.”
Family, Friends, and a Community United in Grief
George was devoted to his wife Sheila, to whom he was married for 72 years. They lived in Tilbury for 58 years and shared a loving family: three children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
The family expressed deep gratitude: “Thanks to friends, One Community Development Trust, Essex Police, and the Ambulance Service – your support means the world to us. George will be greatly missed.”
