Cyclist Crashes After Calling Out Driver on Phone at Traffic Lights
Drama unfolded on Herbert Avenue at 5.20pm on Tuesday 22 November 2022 when a cyclist confronted a driver caught texting behind the wheel. The rider, passing parked cars stopped at traffic lights between Newlyn Way and Northmere Road, spotted the driver of a dark blue hatchback on his mobile phone. He knocked on the car window, telling the driver to put the phone down.
Road Rage Turns Dangerous
The driver erupted in anger, shouting at the cyclist before tailing him as traffic began moving again. The chase continued as the cyclist turned into Northmere Road and then onto Sancreed Road. The hatchback eventually crashed into the rear of the cyclist, knocking him off his bike.
Cyclist Injured, Driver Flees Scene
The victim, a man in his 50s dressed in a high-vis jacket with flashing front and rear bike lights, suffered injuries that thankfully are not believed to be serious. Shockingly, the driver sped off without stopping.
Police Appeal for Witnesses and the Driver to Come Forward
“This was a very distressing incident for the cyclist involved and we are carrying out a number of enquiries into this matter,” said Police Constable Matthew Batter from Poole Police.
“I urge anyone who witnessed the collision or captured dashcam footage to get in touch. We also urge the driver involved to do the right thing and come forward.”
