Tragic Death After Police Chase Ends in Head-On Crash on the A13
A 21-year-old woman has died after a van driver, trying to evade police, drove the wrong way down the A13 in Dagenham, smashing head-on into her friend’s black BMW. The woman was a passenger and died instantly at the scene early this morning.
Van Driver Flees Police, Causes Fatal Collision
Essex Police tried to stop the van soon after 2:30am on November 25. The driver ignored orders and sped along the London-bound carriageway near Rainham, leading officers on a dangerous pursuit. The van then crashed into the BMW, killing the female passenger.
The van driver was trapped in the wreckage and had to be cut free by firefighters. He was arrested and is now in hospital with serious injuries, facing charges including death by dangerous driving.
Police and Emergency Services Respond, Investigation Underway
“Despite the best efforts of officers and medics, a female passenger has died,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Andrew Packer, Essex Police gold commander. “We are working with the Metropolitan Police Service, who are leading the response. The Independent Office of Police Conduct has been notified and will carry out an independent investigation.”
Major Traffic Chaos on A13 After Crash
The A13 remains closed this morning, causing severe delays. Queues have stretched for miles past Rainham and into Barking. The M25 and A127 are also impacted by the fallout of this fatal incident.
The Metropolitan Police Service and London Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
