Junior Doctors Set to Strike Over Massive 35% Pay Demand

Junior doctors are gearing up for a FOUR-DAY strike from April 11 to 15, demanding a hefty 35% pay rise. This bold move comes after years of pay packets lagging behind inflation, fueling frustration and discontent across the NHS.

Pay Talks Collapse Amidst Tory Resistance

The British Medical Association (BMA) clashed with Health Secretary Steve Barclay after talks on April 1 broke down. Barclay slammed the pay hike as “unaffordable,” offering only a 5% rise plus a one-off payment—a deal accepted by other NHS workers but rejected by doctors.

The BMA insists a 35% boost is essential to claw back 15 years of below-inflation pay cheques. Without it, they refuse to budge.

Doctors Furious at Government ‘Foot-Dragging’

Dr Robert Laurenson, co-chair of the BMA’s junior doctor committee, blasted the government’s stance:

“It is with disappointment and great frustration that we must announce this new industrial action. The government has dragged its feet at every opportunity. It has not presented any credible offer and is refusing to accept that there is any case for pay restoration, describing our central ask as ‘unrealistic’ and ‘unreasonable.’”

The determination highlights the ongoing battle junior doctors face for fair pay in the NHS.

More Strikes Loom After Last Week’s Walkout

This strike follows a three-day walkout just last week. Meanwhile, nurses, ambulance crews, physios, and other NHS staff are set to vote on the government’s 5% pay rise offer plus one-off payment. The vote’s outcome will reveal how deep pay grievances run across the health service.
