Mark Spencer cleared over Muslim faith firing claim in Tory shake-up
Minister under fire – then off the hook
Government minister Mark Spencer will face no further action after a probe into allegations he told Tory MP Nusrat Ghani she was axed due to her Muslim faith. Ghani claimed she was dumped in the 2020 reshuffle because of her religion.
Ethics adviser flags ‘shortcomings’ but no proof
Sir Laurie Magnus, the Prime Minister’s ethics adviser, uncovered some flaws in Spencer’s behaviour towards Ghani. However, the investigation found no evidence Spencer or anyone else made negative comments about her faith or that it played any role in reshuffle talks.
Ghani reacts to report’s findings
Speaking out, Ghani said the report “notes omissions, shortcomings, inaccurate briefings and claims implied without evidence.” She hinted the truth might be more complex than the official findings suggest.
