Ford Unveils Eye-Tracking "Hands-Off" Tech for 2023 Mustang Mach-E
BlueCruise: The Future of Assisted Driving
Ford’s new BlueCruise system lets the car handle steering, acceleration, and braking—while a camera keeps a hawk-like eye on the driver’s gaze to ensure they stay focused on the road. Don’t get it twisted: this isn’t a self-driving car. It’s the next big thing in driver assistance.
Subscription-Only Tech for Electric Mustang Mach-E
Launching first on the 2023 electric Mustang Mach-E SUV, BlueCruise comes with a 90-day free trial, then a monthly subscription fee. The tech automatically keeps a safe distance from other vehicles and can halt completely in traffic jams, offering a smoother, less stressful experience.
Driver Must Stay Alert – Eyes on the Road, Hands Ready
The system uses cameras and sensors to spot lane markings, speed limits, and other cars. It takes control only when conditions are safe. But there are strict rules: no phone fiddling, no distractions. If the driver closes their eyes or looks away, BlueCruise issues a warning and demands hands back on the wheel.
Safety and Responsibility Front and Centre
Lisa Brankin, Ford’s MD for Britain and Ireland, stressed that drivers remain responsible for the car. “This isn’t full autonomy,” she said. “Accidents are still the driver’s responsibility.” Transport Minister Jesse Norman added that this tech could slash accidents by cutting driver errors. Sounds like a win for road safety—so long as we keep our eyes peeled.
