Dele Alli Opens Up: The Dark Side Behind Football Stardom
Dele Alli, once hailed as Tottenham’s rising star, has revealed the hidden battles that derailed his glittering career. From Premier League prodigy to struggling midfielder, Alli’s journey has been far from smooth.
From Rising Star to Rough Waters
After a £5 million move from MK Dons at just 19, Alli set the Premier League alight. During the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, he bagged the PFA Young Player of the Year twice and bagged 19 goal involvements in the first season and 27 in the next. But his star started to fade in 2018/19. The arrival of new managers—José Mourinho, Nuno Espírito Santo, and Antonio Conte—did little to revive him.
By January 2022, Alli was shipped to Everton, hoping for a fresh start. Instead, troubles followed, including poor form and reports of missing training during a loan at Besiktas.
Heartbreaking Revelations in Emotional Interview
In a raw chat with Gary Neville on “The Overlap,” Alli lifted the lid on his personal demons. He spoke candidly about a traumatic childhood, addiction to sleeping pills, and the mental toll that shadowed his playing days.
“I think so. It’s the first time in a long while I can genuinely say ‘yes’ and mean it,” Alli told Neville when asked if he’s okay. “I’ve regained my passion for football.”
Alli confessed he was scared to speak out but insisted now was the time to share his story.
Struggles with Addiction and Trauma
Alli revealed his long battle with sleeping tablet addiction, a coping mechanism that masked deeper pain rather than healed it. He admitted to making “stupid mistakes” fueled by his struggles and hopes his honesty helps others facing similar battles.
“Sleeping tablets are given to players to help sleep. But when you’re broken, they just mask the pain. I abused them and never addressed my trauma,” Alli said.
He also opened up about his turbulent upbringing—his alcoholic mother gave him up for adoption, he faced abuse, and was drawn into drug dealing as a kid. By seven, he was sent away to Africa to learn discipline and, at just 11, was already selling drugs.
“I was hung off a bridge by a man from another neighbourhood at twelve. Eventually, I was adopted by an incredible family—if there is a higher power, they were it.”
Hope for a Comeback and Raising Awareness
After discovering he needed surgery and struggling mentally post-Turkey, Alli checked into a modern rehab that targets mental health, addiction, and trauma. He praised Everton for their support and made clear this was his own choice.
Now, with six weeks of rehab behind him, Alli is fighting to reclaim his career and passion. His goal? To prove the critics wrong and shine on the pitch once more.
His story resonates beyond football. By sharing his battles, Alli hopes to smash the stigma around mental health and addiction in sport—and encourage others to seek help.
Support from Teammates and Fans
Following his move to Everton, former Spurs teammate Harry Kane sent a heartfelt message to Alli, backing his comeback and mental health journey.
The interview with Gary Neville has racked up over 29,000 views and counting—highlighting the impact of Alli’s bravery in opening up.
