Two people survived a terrifying plane crash in Bembridge this afternoon — all thanks to heroic bystanders. A light aircraft came down in a caravan park and erupted into flames, but the pilot and passenger walked away alive.

Disaster Strikes Minutes After Takeoff

The chilling incident happened at around 2:30pm on Saturday, 12 April, just after the plane had taken off from Bembridge Airport. Witnesses reported the engine suddenly died, forcing the pilot into a desperate emergency landing attempt.

In a frantic bid to save lives, the plane clipped the tops of cottages on Hillway Road, destroying a chimney and smashing through a garden fence before crashing through a conservatory roof. It then spun 180 degrees, plunged into the caravan park, and burst into flames.

Brave Public Rescue Lives from Burning Wreckage

Despite the raging fire, quick-thinking members of the public sprang into action. They pulled the pilot and passenger from the wreckage moments before it was engulfed by flames.

“Their actions were nothing short of heroic,” said Inspector Alex Dale of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. “There is no doubt their bravery saved lives today.”

Only one person suffered a minor injury. Miraculously, no hospital treatment was needed, and nobody on the ground was hurt — locals are calling it a miracle.

“If it had crashed just a few feet higher or lower, it would’ve gone straight through someone’s home,” a resident told reporters.

Emergency Crews Race to Scene

A large emergency response was launched immediately. Crews from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue, Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, and local police arrived on site pronto. An air ambulance landed nearby but was stood down once it was clear there were no serious injuries.

Firefighters swiftly extinguished the blaze while police secured the crash site and began gathering witness statements.

Flights have since resumed from Bembridge Airport.

Official Probe Underway

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has been notified. Investigators are expected to examine the wreckage to pinpoint what caused the engine failure.
