Teen Gets Out of Ambulance on Busy Motorway

Tragedy struck on the M5 near Weston-super-Mare when 18-year-old Logan Smith climbed out of an ambulance on the live motorway lanes. The ambulance had pulled over to the hard shoulder after paramedics raised concerns about his condition.

Logan, from Somerset, then stepped into the fast-moving traffic, prompting emergency services to call for police backup.

Police Use Taser Before Fatal Collision

An officer arrived on scene and tried to engage with Logan. Bodycam footage reveals the officer discharged a Taser, causing Logan to fall to the ground.

Moments later, he was struck by a vehicle travelling on the opposite carriageway. Despite immediate first aid, Logan died at the scene.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is now investigating Avon and Somerset Police’s actions leading up to the fatal incident.

Mental Health Struggles Raised Weeks Before

Just weeks prior, Logan had expressed his mental health struggles on social media, writing, “Losing myself day by day.” He lamented losing his ex and struggling to get support from doctors.

However, his sister firmly dismissed any suggestion of suicide, calling it a “freak accident.” She added, “Yes, he had mental issues, and it didn’t help that the doctors weren’t listening to him about his medication.”

Police and Family React to Tragedy

IOPC Director Derrick Campbell said,

“My thoughts and sympathies are with Logan’s family and friends after this shocking and tragic incident. We will independently investigate all circumstances, including the Taser use.”

Avon and Somerset Police Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall said the incident deeply affected officers and paramedics involved. Welfare support is being provided both to staff and witnesses. A mandatory referral has been made to the IOPC.

Logan was passionate about motorcycles and studied plumbing at Weston College. Online tributes poured in, with one friend writing: “RIP Logan, you will be missed lil bro, heartbroken is an understatement.”

Avon and Somerset Police have been contacted for further comment.
