A seasoned skydiver from Swindon has died in a wingsuit accident near Exeter. Chas McNeil, 49, was taking part in a jump at Dunkeswell Aerodrome on Saturday just before 1pm.

Experienced Jumper’s Final Flight

Chas, with a staggering 10,000 jumps under his belt, was described as highly experienced. Using his own parachute gear, he had been skydiving alongside a friend when tragedy struck. Emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene.

Third Death at Dunkeswell Aerodrome in Nine Months

His death marks the third fatal accident at the airfield in less than a year. Last June, instructor Adam Harrison, 30, and parachutist Belinda Taylor, 48, both died after their parachute failed mid-jump.

Family and Friends in Mourning

Chas’s family have paid heartfelt tributes. His mother, Karol, said:

“As a mother and father our hearts are heartbroken at the loss of our son Chas. But it gives us strength to see all the love and support from everyone who knew him.”

Tributes Pour In From Veterans Charity

Veterans group Phoenix Heroes also mourned Chas, who was a founding member and key figure in their Veteran Carp Angling Community. A spokesperson said:

“This news has shocked our community and all those that knew Chas. He was a good friend, a talented angler, and a veteran with a passion for skydiving. One of the good ones in life – always smiling, ready to help, living life at full throttle. We will miss you, Chas. Our thoughts are with your family.”

Police & Emergency Response

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed their involvement, stating:

“Police were called to Dunkeswell Aerodrome just before 1pm on Saturday, 28 February, following concerns for the welfare of a male skydiver. Despite emergency efforts, the 49-year-old man was sadly confirmed deceased. His family has been informed. The scene remains under investigation.”

The skydiving community and local area are left reeling after this latest tragedy at the Devon airfield.
