The final episode of Call the Midwife series 15 lands on BBC One this Saturday, March 8, before the hit show takes a well-deserved break. But don’t fret – the pause clears the way for a gripping Second World War prequel and an upcoming big-screen film.
Helen George Spills the Raw Truth About Call the Midwife
Helen George, who plays Trixie Aylward, has ripped off the rose-tinted glasses. Speaking to Radio Times, she revealed how the show confronts life’s brutal realities head-on.
“We’re afraid to be ugly on screen and in real life. But sometimes, real life is ugly. It’s dirty and painful and it’s f***ing hard – and all that is shown on Call the Midwife. Not grotesquely glamorised, not sensationalised. Just truthfully.”
Helen, a series regular since day one, also teased changes ahead once the show returns from its break.
“It is just a pause, because we know it’s coming back. But it won’t be the same, with different characters leaving and whatever.”
Is This Really the End of Call the Midwife?
Worried fans can breathe easy. Writer Heidi Thomas confirmed at last month’s TV Choice Awards that the show isn’t signing off for good.
“I don’t think it’s the last series in the classic form. But we are going to take a break from it for a couple of years,” she said.
“We’re doing a film set in 1972 or 1973, with most of the current cast. Then the series will return but with a slightly different setting because of NHS changes. It’ll still be East End 1 but possibly a small community hospital or GP practice. That’s what I’ll be working on later this year.”
