A missing swimmer who took to the Thames to cool off on the hottest day so far has been found dead. The grim discovery happened near Barge Walk in Kingston after a frantic search by emergency crews.
frantic Search After Evening Distress Call
The incident kicked off around 6:40pm on Sunday when police and ambulance services were alerted to someone struggling in the water. Scotland Yard confirmed the distress call came in at 6:41pm.
The Metropolitan Police’s Marine Policing Unit, London Ambulance Service, Fire Brigade, RNLI, and National Police Air Service all joined the desperate hunt for the swimmer. Body recovered at 12:20pm Monday is believed to be that of the missing person, though formal ID is yet to be made.
Heatwave Drives Many to Risky Thames Waters
Sunday saw temperatures soar to 27.5°C in Surrey and the mid-20s in London, pushing people towards the river for relief. But the Thames is no safe swimming spot. Officials warned of deadly currents, tides, whirlpools, and cold water shock that can catch even the strongest off guard.
Eyewitnesses Recall Emergency Response
“We noticed them going in. Then about half an hour later we saw police cars and ambulances driving down,” said witness Jadine Brunsdon, describing the fast response by emergency teams.
The London Ambulance Service confirmed they were called at 6:40pm but stood down by 10pm Sunday when the swimmer was not found.
Emergency services praised their coordinated teamwork during the search and recovery operation. This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark warning: the Thames is dangerous, especially during heatwaves. Stay safe and think twice before diving in.
