Thousands of fierce Iraqi Kurdish fighters have launched a massive ground invasion into northwestern Iran, sources confirm. The militias, positioned just across the border in Iraq, kicked off their offensive this Wednesday, ramping up tensions in an already volatile region.
President Donald Trump personally held talks with Kurdish leaders on Sunday night, discussing the brewing conflict. Meanwhile, the CIA is reportedly gearing up to arm these Kurdish forces to ignite a larger rebellion inside Iran, CNN reveals.
Kurds: Iran’s Toughest Opposition
These Kurdish militias are the most organised force opposing Iran’s fractured regime. With thousands of battle-hardened warriors seasoned from clashes against ISIS, their entry could seriously destabilise Tehran’s hold and drag Iraq deeper into conflict.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said: “None of our objectives are premised on the support or the arming of any particular force. So, what other entities may be doing, we’re aware of, but our objectives aren’t centred on that.”
Decades of Kurdish Fury Against Iran
The Kurds have a fiery history of rebellion against Iranian rulers, dating back to the Shah’s reign. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian government crushed Kurdish insurgents with vicious force—destroying towns and killing thousands.
Despite sharing a goal to topple Iran’s current regime, Kurdish forces clash with rivals like Reza Pahlavi’s faction, who accuse them of separatism.
Iraq’s Delicate Position Amid Rising Tensions
Iraqi Kurdistan finds itself in a political pressure cooker. Washington denies any official military pact with the Kurds, yet Iran-backed militias have increased attacks on US bases, the American consulate in Erbil, and Kurdish camps.
Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qassim al-Araji confirmed Tehran’s demands for Baghdad to stop opposition crossings. Iraqi forces have strengthened border defences to block insurgents. But Kurdish raids risk deadly clashes with Iran-backed militias inside Iraq, which have already fired missiles and drones at Erbil.
US Military Strikes Heat Up Against Iran
As ground battles unfold, Operation Epic Fury rolls on. US Navy missile destroyers and stealthy F-35 jets spearhead pinpoint strikes inside Iran. Thick smoke clouds billow over Tehran amid relentless bombardment as the region braces for further chaos.
The Kurdish fighters now stand centre stage in a conflict that could spiral into a sweeping regional war.
