Pilot reported for four offences
Following an investigation into the incident, the pilot has now been reported to court for four separate offences relating to drone use and conduct with police.
The alleged offences include:
-
Flying a drone within a Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ) near the airport
-
Operating a drone without a valid operator ID
-
Flying a drone for commercial purposes without appropriate insurance
-
Obstructing police officers by providing false information during the investigation
Authorities say the offences stem from both the location of the drone flight and the way the drone was being used without proper permissions.
Drone seized as evidence
Officials confirmed that the drone has now been seized and will undergo examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
The device will be held as evidence in potential court proceedings connected to the case.
Strict laws around airport drone use
Flying drones close to airports in the UK is tightly regulated due to the potential risk to aircraft safety. The Flight Restriction Zone around airports generally extends up to five kilometres from the runway and requires specific permissions before drones can be operated within the area.
Authorities continue to warn that unauthorised drone activity near airports can lead to criminal charges, large fines, and potential imprisonment if it endangers aircraft operations.
The incident serves as another reminder to drone users to ensure they are properly registered, insured when required, and aware of restricted airspace before flying.
