A man who subjected a woman to relentless coercion and abuse has been locked up, Sussex Police confirmed. Lee Yates was found guilty of coercive and controlling behaviour at Lewes Crown Court, where jurors heard how he dominated every detail of his victim’s life.

Strict Rules and Harsh Control

The court revealed Yates imposed brutal rules. He dictated what the woman wore, how long she could bathe, and even controlled her sleep, forbidding her from going to bed before him or staying in bed longer. His abuse didn’t stop there.

Victim Forced into Exploitation and Threatened With Violence

  • She had to cook his meals and hand over spare cash.
  • Disagreements quickly turned violent. Physical abuse was common.
  • He threatened to kill her pets, plunging her into fear.

Eventually, the victim reported the torment to police, sparking an investigation that led to Yates’s arrest. Officers made sure she received help and protection from specialist services during the case.

Rape Charges Dropped, But Justice Served

Yates also faced two rape charges but was cleared of those. Still, the conviction for coercive and controlling behaviour sends a strong message about how serious such abuse is. Coercive control is a criminal offence in the UK, targeting patterns of abuse that isolate, dominate and psychologically harm victims – even when physical violence isn’t always obvious. Sussex Police said the verdict shows their commitment to fighting domestic abuse and supporting victims brave enough to speak out.
