Anthony Barnes, known online as ‘The Hotel Investigator’ with a YouTube following of over 134,000, has denied breaching a community protection notice banning him from Surrey. The 45-year-old Londoner appeared at Guildford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, accused of attending an anti-immigration protest at a hotel in Horley last August in defiance of the order.

Denied Breach Claims

Mr Barnes, representing himself, challenged the charge of failing to comply with the notice. He insisted he never received official paperwork of the ban and sought to question its validity. However, the prosecution confirmed the documents were sent by recorded delivery and signed for on 28 July.

Safety Concerns Raised

The defendant requested a media ban on publishing his address, citing “multiple threats” against his life and fearing for his family’s safety if certain organisations obtained his location. Surrey Police reported no evidence suggesting a credible threat to Mr Barnes’ life.

Mr Barnes told the court the ban severely impacted his ability to work. “I run a high-profile media channel discussing certain topics,” he said, calling it “outrageous” The prosecution found no threats against him. He described the wait until his next hearing in September 2026 as a “detriment” and said he was “scared” to enter Surrey due to the restrictions.

Next Court Appearance

Mr Barnes was ordered to remain outside Surrey until his next court date on 24 September 2026. The case continues with further hearings to determine compliance with the community protection notice.
