Police have imposed a dispersal order in Melksham following repeated reports of antisocial behaviour, break-ins and damage at the former Avon Tyres site. Wiltshire Police said officers have received numerous reports concerning the site in Bath Road over the past two weeks. Incidents have reportedly involved groups of youths climbing onto buildings, roaming around the grounds and causing damage. Police said parts of the site are due to be demolished, creating a significant safety risk for anyone entering the area. There are also businesses continuing to operate from the site, with officers saying their activities have been obstructed by groups entering and roaming around the grounds.
Police given powers to disperse groups
A Section 35 dispersal order has now been introduced covering the area surrounding the Avon Tyres site. The order gives police officers the power to direct people suspected of involvement in antisocial behaviour or disorder to leave the designated area. Anyone who fails to comply with a direction issued under the order could be arrested. The dispersal order will remain in force until 6.30pm on Saturday, August 8. Police will also carry out increased patrols while the order remains in place.
‘It has become insecure and unsafe’
Neighbourhood Sergeant Charly Chilton said officers were aware of the continuing problems at the site and the concerns being raised by residents and the building’s owner. She said: “We are aware of the ongoing issues at the Avon Tyres site in Bath Road and the concern it’s causing for local residents and the owner of the building. “Not only that but due to the repeated break ins at the site and damage caused to the exterior and interior, it has become insecure and unsafe. “A dispersal order has now been implemented. We will be conducting regular patrols in the area and anyone found in the area who should not be, will be dispersed immediately. “Anyone who doesn’t comply with the order or returns after being dispersed faces being arrested.” Police are urging people to stay away from unsafe parts of the site while the order remains in force.
