£200K Cash Splash to Smash Mobile Blackouts on UK Trains

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has just dropped a bombshell: a £200,000 fund to revolutionise mobile signal on Britain’s railways. The goal? End those infuriating internet dead zones on trains and deliver stronger, faster wifi for thousands of passengers.

Game Changer: Antennas on Overhead Lines

With over a third of Britain’s 11,000 miles of railway electrified by overhead line equipment (OLE), research shows these existing structures can double as mobile signal hotspots. This means no need for ugly new masts cluttering the tracks—cutting costs and boosting connectivity.

The Mott MacDonald report, released today, reveals this smart tech is already making waves abroad in countries like Austria. Now, UK telecom firms are being called up to craft the perfect antennas. The next stage? Live tests on real rail lines, with results expected by March 2021.

Officials Back Up The Push for Better Signal

Grant Shapps said: “It’s just not good enough that mobile connectivity on trains is still rubbish. We need to help people work, shop, and chat without signal dropping every five minutes.

By using innovation and existing infrastructure, we can create the railway of the future. Telecom operators, step up and let’s get this show on the road!”

Charlene Wallace, Network Rail’s director: “We want to team up with government and telecoms to deliver reliable mobile coverage that actually improves journeys.

This funding lets us test solutions at our Rail Innovation Centres, and combined with better station facilities and accessibility, it means a better journey especially as more people return after lockdown.”

Passengers Demand Better WiFi: The Evidence

Meanwhile, fresh polling from Transport Focus paints a bleak picture: rail passengers are fed up with patchy wifi and slow internet. According to their survey, satisfaction is low even though connectivity is expected as standard.

Anthony Smith, chief of Transport Focus: “From planning journeys to working on the go, passengers want reliable internet on the move.

But only 3 in 10 are happy with their connection on trains. They’ll be thrilled to hear about this new trial.”

The Road Ahead for Rail WiFi

As Ofcom gears up to release updated rules on trackside wifi frequency bands this Monday (27 July), the government’s plans get another boost.

The Department for Transport and Network Rail aim to pick a railway line with OLE to kick off live trials by next March. They welcome telecom companies to get involved and help put prototype antennas through their paces.

It’s official: the end of no-signal doom on trains may be in sight—and a far better wifi journey could soon be rolling your way.
