Southampton Police Hunt Cigarette Thieves and Fencing Shops

Southampton police are on the case after a string of armed raids targeting convenience stores across Hampshire. Stores in Southampton, Romsey, North Baddesley, Eastleigh, and nearby areas have been hit by groups of masked robbers. These gangs swoop in, threaten staff, and make off with large hauls of cash and stacks of cigarettes.

Thieves Target Cigarettes to Sell On

Robbers use large rubble bags to haul away the cigarettes, striking mostly during opening hours or early evening. They often escape in stolen vehicles, making chasing them tricky. Detective Inspector Colin White revealed the cigarettes are the prime prize, stolen to be sold quickly for profit.

“We believe the cigarettes being taken are the main objective of this group to sell on and make quick money. That wouldn’t happen without local shops complicity,” said DI White.

Police Warn Shops Fueling Crime Wave

Authorities suspect some local stores are buying stolen stock to make a quick buck, putting themselves and honest shop owners at risk. Police are urging the public to report any unusual cigarette deals – especially shops selling one brand in bulk or undercutting prices.

“A few local shops accept stolen goods and sell them, putting others at risk,” DI White explained. “We want to know who’s behind this.”
