Arson Probe Launched After Two Barns Blaze in Hampshire Village
A major fire has ripped through two barns in the Hampshire village of Barton Stacey, and police are treating the incident as suspicious.
Firefighters Battle Blaze in Freezing Conditions
The blaze erupted around 4pm on Thursday, December 29th. Fire crews battled the flames late into the night amid bitter sub-zero temperatures. Water from the hoses froze on the ground, making the scene even more treacherous.
Six fire engines from across north Hampshire were called in, including teams from Andover, Overton, and Basingstoke. Two water carriers also responded from Andover and Fareham. Relief crews are expected to stay overnight to fully control the fire.
Barns Containing 5,000 Bales of Straw Destroyed
The two barns contained around 5,000 bales of straw, which fuelled the ferocious fire. Flames engulfed the buildings located near Difford Kennels and Cattery and Dever Spring Trout Farm along The Street.
Complicating firefighters’ efforts, the barns are believed to contain asbestos, adding a hazardous element to the blaze safety concerns.
Road Closure and No Injuries Reported
The Street remains closed to traffic due to ongoing emergency operations and icy conditions caused by water runoff. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.
Authorities have launched an arson investigation as they work to get to the bottom of the cause.
