Candle Chaos in Chatham: Blaze Erupts After Candle Sparks Dryer Fire

A careless candle sparked chaos on Salisbury Road, Chatham, after it toppled onto a clothes air dryer, setting garments ablaze. The blaze prompted a swift emergency response with two fire engines and South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) rushing to the scene.

Firefighters Douse Flames Quickly, Smoke Cleared

Fire crews, dressed in breathing apparatus, battled the flames head-on with a hose reel jet. Once the fire was out, they deployed a powerful high-pressure fan to clear thick smoke from the home.

Casualty and Caution: Minor Injuries and Safety Warnings

One person suffered minor burns to their hand and was treated immediately by paramedics. Three others were checked on the spot for smoke inhalation as a precaution.

Fire chiefs took the chance to remind everyone about candle safety:

  • Never leave candles unattended. Always stay with burning candles.
  • Use sturdy candle holders. Keep candles far from flammable items like clothes and curtains.
  • Choose safe candle spots. Avoid windowsills or floors where drafts or knocks could cause accidents.
  • Test smoke alarms regularly. Make sure alarms work on every floor—they can save lives.

Don’t Let Candles Cause Disaster

House fires triggered by candles are surprisingly common, usually the result of simple carelessness. Follow these basic tips to avoid turning a cosy night in into a nightmare.
