Darren McGarvey Takes on UK’s Public Service Crisis in Hard-Hitting New Show
Scottish social commentator, author, and rapper Darren McGarvey is gearing up to launch his first UK-wide TV series, Mind the Gap. Co-produced by BBC Scotland and BBC Factual, the eye-opening show set to air on BBC Two and iPlayer will tackle the biggest challenges facing Britain’s public services today.
On the Front Lines of Britain’s Crisis
In Mind the Gap, McGarvey gets unprecedented access to the heart of the UK’s justice, healthcare, and social systems. Once the nation’s pride, these services now struggle under pressure, impacting millions daily. McGarvey dives into the widening divide between rich and poor, public and private sectors, seeking to uncover the root causes of inequality.
Across the UK… and Beyond
Over three episodes, McGarvey travels Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland — even venturing to Norway and Finland for fresh perspectives. He immerses himself in the lives of people at both ends of the social spectrum, bringing their struggles and stories to the screen.
Spotlighting Solutions Amidst Struggles
The series doesn’t just expose problems. McGarvey meets individuals and initiatives bridging these divides and making real change happen in education, health, and justice. His aim? To shine a light on those fighting back against inequality.
“With my previous series being based solely in Scotland, I’m really excited to take on a UK-wide view of social inequality,” McGarvey said. “There are differences between the nations, but the trends are similar enough to need a proper deep dive. We’ve gained privileged access to those on the front lines of modern life’s toughest challenges.”
From BAFTAs to Bold New Frontiers
This new series builds on McGarvey’s acclaimed BBC Scotland work, including the BAFTA-winning Darren McGarvey’s Addictions and RTS award favourite Class Wars. BBC Scotland’s David Harron hailed McGarvey as “a huge and exciting talent” and called the show’s focus “timely and urgent.”
Harry Bell, Managing Director at producers Tern TV, added: “Darren is the perfect fit for this pivotal series. This show will add a fresh, fascinating angle to the national debate on our public institutions and their future.”
Coming Soon to BBC Two and iPlayer
Mind the Gap was commissioned by David Harron (BBC Scotland) and Aisling O’Connor (BBC Factual). Directed by Jack Cocker and produced by Emma Fentiman with executive Harry Bell, the series is also made in partnership with The 1 University. Expect a bold, no-holds-barred look at the forces shaping UK public services, coming early next year on BBC Scotland and BBC Two.
