Road Rage and Reckless Driving Lands Man in Jail
Rickey Howley, 32, sparked chaos in Peterborough with a violent attack and dangerous driving spree. The trouble began on 26 June 2020 when Howley, behind the wheel of a white Seat Leon, clashed with a couple in a car park.
Metal Pole Assault in Car Park
After a heated argument in Chadburn, Howley pulled out a metal pole from his boot and struck a man on the side of the head, leaving a nasty gash that required stitches. The victim managed to snap photos of Howley’s speeding car before he fled the scene. Police arrested Howley the following week, charging him with inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.
High-Speed Crash and Police Confrontation
Less than a month later, on 18 July at around 1:50am, Howley was caught driving a black Ford Focus at breakneck speed in a 30mph zone on Hargate Way. He lost control after hitting speed bumps, narrowly missing parked cars before smashing into fencing and a metal communications box. The crash cut internet access for local residents.
When a passerby tried to help, Howley bolted, sparking a chase that ended with police catching up at Shore View. Officers worried about a possible head injury, but Howley was obstructive and abusive, refusing a roadside breath test and even spitting in an officer’s face.
Jailed for Multiple Crimes
Howley fought with police during transit to the hospital and had to be restrained on arrival. A blood test revealed cannabis and cocaine in his system, with small amounts of cannabis also found on him.
- Admitted offences include grievous bodily harm without intent, assaulting an emergency worker, two counts of dangerous driving, and failing to stop after a collision.
- Also charged with driving without insurance, possession of cannabis, two counts of drug driving, and refusing to give a specimen.
On 24 May at Peterborough Crown Court, Howley was jailed for two years and four months. He was banned from driving for two years and six months.
PC Thomas Hughes said: “Howley’s behaviour was despicable. It is only luck that nobody else was injured when he crashed his car.”
“To spit at an officer who was concerned for his welfare is truly disgraceful. We won’t tolerate attacks on our officers and will always prosecute those who assault them for doing their job.”
“I’m pleased he’s been jailed and hope the driving ban makes our roads safer.”
