Tragedy in Stoke Newington: Young Man Shot Dead in Early Hours

Just after 1am on Sunday, 19 November 2006, 20-year-old Darren Ogiste was walking with friends along Stoke Newington Church Street when the unthinkable happened.

Suddenly, gunfire erupted. One shot, then five or six more in rapid succession. Panic broke out as the group scattered in all directions, desperate to escape the hail of bullets.

Darren Falls, Dies at Scene

Darren and a mate sprinted down the street, but tragedy struck as Darren collapsed outside the Church Street Supermarket. Rushed to hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival. The post-mortem confirmed a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.

Darren’s friend was also hit but survived his injuries.

Police Hunting Leads After Five Arrests

The investigation has seen five men arrested, yet no charges have been filed. Detectives believe the community holds the key to solving Darren’s murder and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

“Sixteen years have passed since Darren was murdered, but no murder investigation is ever closed,” said Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers. “My team and I remain committed to getting justice for Darren and his family.”

“They’ve lost sixteen birthdays, Christmases and countless family moments without him. That’s not right. The pain they feel today is as raw as the day it happened.”

“I believe there are people who have information that could bring them justice. If that’s you, speak to us in strict confidence or contact Crimestoppers anonymously. Help end this family’s unbearable grief.”
