Fatal Punch Outside The Crown Inn
David Darke, 66, a cherished father and grandfather, died after being punched outside The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire — just days before Christmas. Known as Dave to family and friends, he suffered fatal head injuries on December 21 and passed away six days later at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre.
A 36-year-old man was first arrested for grievous bodily harm but has since been re-arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody as police continue their probe.
Heartbreaking Family Tribute
“He was a deeply loved father to three daughters and a proud grandfather of three boys,” the family said.
“Dave was strong, active, intelligent and kind — passionate about life, nature, and walking. A devoted family man, his life was tragically cut short.”
“He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him and is now reunited with his loving parents.”
Village in Shock Over Sudden Death
Neighbours called Dave “a very nice man” and “a friend to all.” He lived alone just half a mile from the pub, on the edge of the National Forest.
Chris Adams, 71, who lives next to The Crown Inn, said: “We didn’t hear or see anything. It’s very sad and shocking for such a quiet village.”
Local Millie Newall, 21, added: “It’s scary. Things like this don’t happen here.”
Longtime residents Paul and Julie Sambrook described the attack as “totally out of the blue” and “completely out of character” for the peaceful community.
Police Urge Witnesses to Speak Out
Leicestershire Police and the East Midlands Special Operations Unit are continuing their investigation. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
The emergency services were called just before 9:45pm on the night of the attack. The tight-knit village community remains stunned as they mourn their treasured local man.
