Shock Horror as Drunk Cruise Passenger Plunges Overboard in Front of Family
Tragic Leap from Liberty of the Seas
A 20-year-old man, believed to be intoxicated, stunned passengers and crew when he suddenly jumped overboard from the towering 18-storey Royal Caribbean ship, Liberty of the Seas. The horrific scene was witnessed by his own father and brother, who were left helpless as he disappeared into the dark waters.
Distress Before the Fall
The drama unfolded just before dawn at around 4am during the cruise’s journey from Cuba to the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island. Eyewitnesses said the young man shouted, “I’ll fix this right now,” before making the fatal leap from a window. One passenger, Bryan Sims, who had been socialising with the man and his brother in a hot tub earlier, described him as “pretty drunk.” Sims recalled an argument between the man and his father about his state before the plunge.
Immediate Rescue Efforts Underway
The US Coast Guard quickly launched search and rescue operations, aided by Royal Caribbean’s crew. The cruise line confirmed their Care Team is supporting the devastated family, while respecting their privacy. Fellow passenger Deborah Morrison described the scene as chaotic, with the family visibly distraught and in shock.
Warnings Over Alcohol and Impulsive Actions
This tragic incident highlights the dangers of alcohol-fuelled impulsive decisions on board cruise ships. With thousands on deck, such fallout sends a chilling message to the cruise community about the urgent need for vigilance and better support mechanisms to avoid future heartbreaks.
