New £5,000 Pet Rescue Grant Targets Illegal Breeding Crisis
Applications open on January 24 for a pioneering Pet Rescue Grant aimed at helping dogs, cats, and rabbits caught up in the UK’s illegal pet trade. The Naturewatch Foundation is offering £5,000 grants to UK charities and community interest companies dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating animals suffering from unscrupulous breeders and sellers.
Half of Puppies May Come From Illicit Sources
The illegal pet trade is running rampant, with estimates suggesting nearly 50% of puppies come from unlawful breeding operations. This dirty market not only puts animal welfare at risk but also lands pet owners with sick or mistreated animals. Worse, it’s now a hotbed for organised crime.
Naturewatch Steps Up as Rescue Groups Battle Rising Challenges
Naturewatch Foundation, famous for pushing tighter pet welfare laws, actively probes public reports on illegal breeding. “It’s tragic that so many precious pets are bought from the illicit trade,” said Natalie Harney from Naturewatch. “Without the rescue sector, countless abused animals wouldn’t get the care they desperately need. Our Pet Rescue Grant is a small lifeline to those heroic groups piecing these animals’ lives back together.”
