Smoke Spurs Fire Alarm at Palace of Westminster
Fire crews scrambled to the Palace of Westminster in the heart of London after smoke was spotted billowing from the iconic building. Multiple fire engines arrived on St Margaret’s Street shortly after 9am Friday, raising fresh alarm over the historic site.
Historic Palace Plagued by Problems
The Grade I-listed palace, built in 1870 and currently undergoing a massive refurbishment, is infamous for its ticking time bomb of issues. It’s plagued by dangerous old electrics, leaky roofs and pipes, asbestos hazards, rodents, and even falling masonry.
Past Fires Highlight Serious Risk
Shockingly, the Palace caught fire 40 times between 2008 and 2012 alone. This fire risk means a permanent fire safety team patrols the building day and night. The cause of Friday’s smoke remains unclear as investigations continue.
