UK’s ‘Three-Parent Babies’ Offer Hope Against Fatal Mitochondrial Diseases

What Are Mitochondrial Diseases?
Mitochondrial diseases cause severe brain damage, muscle failure, heart problems, and blindness. These incurable conditions are passed exclusively from mother to child through faulty mitochondria.
How Does Mitochondrial Donation Work?
Scientists devised a clever twist on IVF called mitochondrial donation treatment. This involves swapping out defective mitochondria with healthy ones from a donor egg, giving babies DNA from both parents plus a small slice from the donor. Crucially, this donor DNA only affects cell powerhouses and does not make the donor a ‘third parent’.

Fewer Than Five Babies Born Using UK Technique
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) revealed fewer than five babies have been born via this method by April 2023. They’re keeping numbers secret to protect family privacy, following a Freedom of Information request.
Sarah Norcross, director of the Progress Educational Trust, said: “News that a small number of babies with donated mitochondria have now been born in the UK is the next step, in what will probably remain a slow and cautious process of assessing and refining mitochondrial donation.”
Experts still debate the long-term success and safety. Professor Robin Lovell-Badge of the Francis Crick Institute wonders if these babies will stay clear of mitochondrial disease and what risks might appear later. One worry is “reversion,” when defective mitochondria may multiply over time, potentially bringing back disease.
Initially, experts hoped 150 babies a year could be born using this tech in the UK.
