Nadine Dorries Faces Probe Over ‘Threatening’ Messages to Civil Servants
Former MP Nadine Dorries could be in hot water after allegedly sending “threatening” messages to top civil servants. The row erupted after she missed out on a peerage in Boris Johnson’s resignation honours list. Simon Case, the UK’s most senior civil servant, has passed the matter to the Tory Chief Whip for further action.
Simon Case Flags Messages to Tory Bigwigs
Simon Case revealed in a tense Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee session on Wednesday that he informed both the Commons Speaker and Chief Whip about Ms Dorries’s “forceful” communications. Tory MP William Wragg grilled Case on whether Dorries intended to use her Commons platform and TV programme to probe why she was snubbed from the peers’ list — Case confirmed he was fully aware.
Case is also seeking legal advice on whether the Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act 1925 could apply, adding another layer of scrutiny to the scandal.
Lib Dems Demand Tory Whip Withdrawal
The Liberal Democrats have seized on the controversy, urging Chancellor Rishi Sunak to strip Nadine Dorries of the Tory whip while the investigation plays out. Pressure is mounting for swift disciplinary steps amid fears this could damage the party’s reputation ahead of the conference season.
The Plot Thickens with New Book Release
Described by Wragg as a “lingering” presence in Parliament representing Mid Bedfordshire, Ms Dorries is also stirring the pot with a new book, The Plot: The Political Assassination of Boris Johnson, set for publication by HarperCollins just before the Tory conference in September. She has already received a £20,500 advance for the tell-all, which promises juicy revelations from Cabinet ministers, civil servants, and party insiders about deep rifts within the Conservatives.
