£3.2 Million Isle of Wight Floating Bridge Runs Aground During Cowes Week
The Isle of Wight’s £3.2 million Cowes “floating bridge” has ground to a halt – literally. At 1.30pm on Wednesday, the bridge got stuck on the slipway, leaving both passengers and vehicles stranded.
“Floaty McFloatface” Stranded and Stuck
Nicknamed “Floaty McFloatface” by locals, the bridge left several vehicles trapped mid-span. Staff quickly ordered everyone off, and drivers were assisted in reversing vehicles back up the steep slipway.
Delays Hit Cowes Week Visitors
The service halt has caused chaos for visitors trying to cross during Cowes Week. A long queue has formed for the replacement passenger launch, which is now operating in the meantime.
Council Waiting for High Tide to Free Bridge
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson revealed: “We are waiting for high water to release the bridge from the slipway, expected between 5 and 6pm.” There’s no set time for the bridge’s full service to resume.
