Tragedy struck late Thursday night on South Tyneside’s coastline as a man’s car careered off a cliff edge near Marsden Grotto in South Shields. Northumbria Police confirmed the death after emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of a vehicle leaving the A183 Coast Road.
Rescue Teams Scramble Amid Cliffside Chaos
Around 11.45pm on June 6, responders arrived to find the vehicle having crashed down jagged rocks beyond the road’s grassy verge. A dramatic search and rescue operation was launched, involving the RNLI lifeboats and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue. Photographs from the scene show a crushed black car battered against the cliff base.
Police Confirm No Foul Play
Authorities later found the driver deceased in the wrecked car. Northumbria Police have ruled out any suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement. A full report is being prepared for the coroner as the investigation continues.
