Students Fined for Throwing Illegal Covid Parties in Canterbury

Police have cracked down on a series of unlawful student parties breaking Covid-19 rules across Canterbury. Officers have slapped fines on dozens of students who flouted Government restrictions aimed at curbing the virus spread.

Party Police Called in Last Weekend

  • March 18, Somner Close: At 11.15pm, police responded to reports of a wild student party. Five organisers were hit with fines.
  • March 19, Otham Close: Around 11.45pm, officers spotted over 10 people fleeing through the back door of a property. Four received fixed penalty notices, while eight others dispersed before being caught.
  • March 20, Kemsing Gardens: Just before 11.30pm, a large gathering of about 20 students was reported. Nineteen fines were issued on the spot.
  • March 20, South Street: Later that night, police handed out 14 more fines after breaking up another student party.

Community Plea and Police Warning

Inspector Guy Thompson of the Community Safety Unit said: “Students are a valued part of Canterbury, and most respect Government rules to stop Covid-19.”

“However, a small minority spoil it by hosting parties and breaching the law. We work closely with all local universities to remind students about the rules and consequences, and we’ll keep up this engagement.”

Authorities urge students to take responsibility seriously to protect their health and those around them. The message is clear: no more illegal parties, or face fines and penalties.
