Knife Crime Crackdown Nets Nearly 400 Weapons in Hampshire

Police have dealt a hefty blow to knife crime during Operation Sceptre, a week-long blitz from November 17 to 23. Across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, officers arrested eight suspects linked to knife crimes and seized a staggering 385 offensive weapons. With 19 hotspot patrols and 31 weapons sweeps, nearly 400 knives were wiped from the streets.

Stop-and-searches added three more blades to the haul. The crackdown was a joint effort, with partners across all districts working hard to curb violence.

Cracking Down on Retailers and Reaching Communities

Enforcement wasn’t the only weapon in police arsenal. Officers ran 216 community engagement events, including knife arches, pop-up stands, and patrols targeting hotspots. The goal? Reassure the public and educate youngsters on the dangers of knife carrying.

A major focus was preventing knives from getting into the wrong hands. The Violent Crime Taskforce conducted 82 test purchases at local and national retailers. While 73 passed, nine failed and have since been referred to Trading Standards for action.

Thousands of Young People Targeted with Life-Saving Messages

The fight against knife crime also reached schools, colleges, and universities. The Education Partnership Team ran workshops during 56 visits, reaching around 5,000 young people. The clear aim: smash knife myths, educate, and stop knife carrying before it starts.

Top Cops and Officials Speak Out

Inspector James Barton, Tactical Lead for Hampshire & Isle of Wight: “Every knife taken off the streets reduces serious harm and saves lives. Operation Sceptre isn’t just about arrests — it’s about prevention, education and working with communities. Carrying a knife is never worth the risk.”

“Most retailers follow the law to stop knives getting to young people, but we won’t hesitate to act against those who don’t. Engaging with young people and communities is vital to changing attitudes and saving lives.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones: “It’s encouraging to see nearly 400 weapons surrendered, but it only takes one to kill. Through the Violence Reduction Unit, we support vulnerable young people at risk of carrying knives. We’re determined to keep communities safe and build on the biggest reductions in knife crime nationally.”

If you know someone carrying a knife, report it to the police, a trusted adult, or anonymously via Crimestoppers. Don’t stay silent — every tip could save a life.
