Seven Busts Hit Essex in Crackdown on Drug Dealers
At dawn on Wednesday 7 October, police swooped on seven locations across Essex, including Grays, Wickford, Brentwood, and Canvey Island. The raids, launched at 6.30am, targeted a drugs network selling across the county.
Nine Arrested in Drugs and Money Laundering Probe
Nine suspects were arrested on charges tied to drug offences and money laundering. Officers uncovered a cannabis grow operation along with a stash of equipment during the swoops.
Big Break from EncroChat Takedown
This major investigation stems from Operation Venetic – a global law enforcement mission that cracked EncroChat, a secure encrypted messaging platform used exclusively by criminals.
EncroChat boasted 60,000 users globally, with around 10,000 in the UK. It was the go-to tool for plotting criminal deeds, including drug trafficking and laundering cash.
Since 2016, police from multiple countries have hunted the platform. Earlier this year, French and Dutch agencies infiltrated EncroChat, feeding intelligence back through Europol to UK forces.
Police Vow to Stamp Out Drug Crime
Detective Inspector Steve Nelson, leading the raids for Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said:
“Drugs cause misery to our communities and we know their sale can also lead to other forms of crime, including burglaries, robberies, and violent crime.”
“Where drugs are being sold, often there are also vulnerable people being exploited. We will always do everything we can to protect people and keep people safe. The warrants this morning will help do that.”
