UK Border Force Patrolling French Beaches to Stop Channel Crossings
For the first time ever, UK Border Force officers are teaming up with French authorities to patrol northern French beaches. The move aims to tackle the surge of illegal immigrants making dangerous Channel crossings.
Home Office Backs Joint Crackdown
The Home Office said the partnership is “critical” in fighting the rise in risky Channel crossings. They promised to “build on close cooperation” and increase the number of French gendarmes on patrol.
“The new agreement will significantly increase the number of French gendarmes patrolling the beaches of northern France, ensuring that UK and French officers work together to stop people smugglers.”
But Critics Say It’s a Waste of Time
Despite the fanfare, sceptics warn this effort won’t stop the crossings. Smugglers are barely inconvenienced – usually just having their dinghies punctured or seized. No arrests or detentions are made, and immigration status checks are rare.
- Smugglers and illegal migrants often just slip away to try again.
- French police recently caught a gang heading for the beach, only for them to boast days later about successfully making it across the Channel.
With smugglers undeterred, the crisis on the Channel looks far from over.
