Tonbridge Fights Back Against Drink Spiking
Police in Tonbridge are cracking down on drink spiking with new safety measures. Pubs and bars across the town have been handed “Spikeys” – clever bottle devices that let you sip through a straw while stopping anyone tampering with your drink.
Inspector Jones: “Drink Spiking Is Rare But Real”
Inspector Lizzie Jones from the Tonbridge and Malling Community Safety Unit reassured the public: “The vast majority of women enjoy nights out without incident. There are no specific hotspots for drink spiking – it remains extremely rare. But it can happen, and it puts people at risk of sexual assault and theft.”
Ask for Angela and Personal Alarms Keep You Safe
- Police patrols are spreading the word about the “Ask for Angela” scheme, where worried drinkers can discreetly alert bar staff for help if they feel unsafe – whether it’s a dodgy date or an abusive partner.
- Female venue staff working late are being armed with personal alarms for safer journeys home after shifts.
Inspector Jones added: “Our work with local pubs, restaurants, and transport hubs like the train station is vital to making sure women feel confident and safe while out – without fear of becoming victims.”
