Met Cracks Down on Saturday’s London Protest
The Met Police have issued a stark warning ahead of a planned protest on Saturday, 28 November. Protesting does not count as a permitted reason to gather under current UK Coronavirus rules. Anyone joining the demo risks enforcement action.
Strict Covid Rules: No Excuses for Protests
The Government’s tough national Covid restrictions ban gatherings – including protests – to curb the virus spread. Officers are ready to enforce the rules across London this weekend with a robust policing plan in place.
“The Met has a proud history of facilitating protest. However, our city is in a critical fight against Covid-19 and we cannot allow gatherings to jeopardise the progress and sacrifices our communities have made in fighting this virus,” said Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell.
“Our top priority is public safety and that is why we cannot allow individuals to break the law and put their health and the health of their friends, family and the wider community at risk. If you are planning on attending a gathering, I would urge you to reconsider and stay at home.”
Police to Monitor Coach Travel Into London
Police have been working closely with national forces and coach companies all week. They’ve been tracking attempts by protest organisers to hire coaches from across the country to bring people into London.
“This type of behaviour not only breaks the law, it also risks spreading the virus between multiple areas of the country,” Chief Superintendent Bell added. “We urge people not to travel into London and will take enforcement action if they do.”
London’s streets are set to see zero tolerance for illegal protests this weekend as the Met prioritises public health over unrest.
