Teen Arrested After Soho Streets Overrun by Viral Pop-Up Chaos
Hundreds of teens flooded Soho on Thursday, 22 February, after a viral marketing stunt sparked an unplanned pop-up that quickly descended into mayhem. The Metropolitan Police swooped in just after midday when crowds surged across Dean Street, Marshall Street, and Broadwick Street.
Police Hit Back with Dispersal Order
As chaos escalated, officers slapped on a Section 35 dispersal order across Westminster Borough, giving them power to eject troublemakers for up to 48 hours. Despite the crackdown, anti-social antics ran rampant. Online clips showed youths jumping on a police vehicle, causing damage, and even donning police hats and high-vis jackets left inside the car. One video caught the gang laughing while perched on the police car’s bonnet.
Under-16 Boy Arrested Amid Rising Disorder
Police arrested a boy believed to be under 16 at the scene. He faces charges including:
- Theft from a motor vehicle
- Criminal damage
- Affray
He remains in custody as investigations continue. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but local businesses and pedestrians faced major disruption.
“We are aware of the widespread footage circulating online showing the large gathering in Soho. A dispersal order was swiftly put in place, and one arrest was made,” said a Metropolitan Police spokesperson. “We’re working to identify others involved in criminal damage and anti-social behaviour. We urge anyone with information or footage to come forward.”
Soho Businesses Left Counting the Cost
High-visibility police patrols will keep watch over Soho this weekend to deter more unruly behaviour and reassure the public.
But local traders are fuming. One café owner on Dean Street told UKNIP:
“It was absolute mayhem. We had to shut our doors for safety as crowds spilled into the road. It felt really unsafe for a while.”
Viral Stunts Under Scrutiny
This incident has sparked fresh concerns over how social media platforms like TikTok fuel spontaneous flash mobs and pop-ups without any safety planning. Westminster Council is pushing for tighter rules and closer cooperation with social media firms to prevent future flare-ups.
