Scott Chilton Returns as Hampshire Chief Constable

Scott Chilton, 49, is back where it all began—Hampshire Police. Starting as a fresh-faced 18-year-old, Chilton has spent 31 years climbing the ranks. With 16 of those as a detective and stints leading major police commands, including a recent role as Dorset’s chief constable and national investigations lead, he’s no stranger to tough policing.

Putting Communities First

“Strong relationships with our local communities are the bedrock of policing,” Chilton said. “People want to feel connected to their local teams and safe. That is my point of view.”

He promises relentless pursuit of criminals who bring misery to neighbourhoods and top-tier investigations to bring offenders to justice. Victims will always be treated with kindness and compassion.

Local Man, Local Focus

Chilton isn’t just the new chief constable—he’s a Hampshire resident with family and friends in the area. “Both personally and professionally, I share your expectations,” he said. His focus is on improving officer visibility and re-establishing neighbourhood teams that connect with communities, tackling local crime head-on.

At the Police and Crime Panel meeting, Chilton backed the Police and Crime Commissioner’s plan to boost officer numbers under the ‘More Police, Safer Streets’ initiative. The extra officers coming to Hampshire and the Isle of Wight will help crack down on crime and increase policing presence on the streets.

Commissioner Donna Jones Welcomes New Chief

Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones praised Chilton’s return. “Scott has vast experience and is perfect to lead Hampshire into a new era,” she said.

“We both share a vision to strengthen neighbourhood policing. I’m committed to bringing back named local bobbies to every community by April 2024, with Scott’s full support. Together, we want Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to be the safest places to live, work, and visit.”

“The public expects tougher crime-fighting, more visible officers, and a force that brings offenders to justice. I’m confident Scott will deliver on these promises with strong leadership.”
