Met Police Specials Clock Over 100,000 Hours Battling Covid Crisis
London’s Metropolitan Police special constables have smashed it, donating more than 100,000 volunteer hours in March and April to fight coronavirus.
These volunteer officers are hitting the streets, backing up the Met’s response by enforcing lockdown, patrolling, and engaging with Londoners to keep the capital safe.
Volunteer Hours Double in April
The extra muscle from specials has surged. In April alone, they worked a colossal 61,779 hours — more than double the 29,645 hours logged in April 2019. Their dedication is crucial amid this unprecedented public health crisis.
Metropolitan Special Constabulary Chief Officer John Conway said: “Now more than ever, special constables are a vital and valued part of the Met family, giving up their time to help police London. It’s a huge credit to every one of them stepping up to support their communities during this challenging time.”
Balancing Full-Time Jobs and Volunteering
Many specials juggle demanding day jobs alongside their volunteering. Met Health and Safety Advisor Gary Shepherd, a special constable since 1996, explained:
“I’ve continued my full-time role while boosting my volunteering hours. I attend incidents in the Transport for London tunnels, perform Covid-19 duties, and support Met operations. This pandemic shows how officers, staff, and volunteers pull together to thrive under pressure. I’m proud to serve alongside some truly inspiring people.”
Former Officers Returning to Serve
Some ex-Met officers have rejoined as specials, committing at least 16 hours a month to protect communities. Former Police Constable Chris Neal, back after 18 months away, said:
“I worked for the Met for 11 years and was thinking about returning as a special. The Commissioner’s call pushed me to sign up. I felt a strong duty to help during this pandemic and put my skills to use.”
