A 25-year-old British man of Somali heritage has been arrested over the murder of Sir David Amess. He was not previously known to security services, but the probe is still in its early stages and that could change as new details emerge.
Suspect Held at Scene of Attack
The man was detained at the Methodist church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, where Sir David, MP for Southend West, was stabbed during his weekly constituency surgery on Friday.
Prevent Scheme Connection
A Whitehall source revealed the suspect had been previously flagged by the government’s Prevent programme, designed to stop radicalisation. However, he was not on any active watch list at the time.
