Royal Mail workers, university lecturers, and sixth-form staff are all downing tools today in a massive pay strike wave sweeping the UK.

Postal Strikes Threaten Christmas Chaos

Royal Mail warns their ongoing strikes could “hold Christmas to ransom” for millions of customers. Picket lines have sprung up outside Royal Mail offices, universities, and colleges, marking one of the biggest coordinated walkouts in recent memory.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU), representing Royal Mail employees, has plans for further strikes next month — including a chilling Christmas Eve walkout.

“Royal Mail bosses are risking a Christmas meltdown because of their stubborn refusal to treat their employees with respect,” said CWU General Secretary Dave Ward.

“Our postal workers want to deliver Christmas gifts, but they will not meekly accept the casualisation of their jobs.”

Strike Storm Hits Public Services

The unrest is not limited to posties. Nurses, ambulance staff, rail workers, and firefighters have also lined up strikes in December and January. Ambulance workers in England plan to strike ahead of Christmas, while firefighters are voting on strike action after rejecting a 5% pay rise.

  • Rail workers from the RMT union will stage eight days of strikes across December and January, targeting key transport routes.
  • Royal College of Nursing has confirmed strikes on December 15 and 20.
  • Bus drivers for Abellio and Metroline plan multiple days of industrial action throughout December.
  • Civil servants numbering around 100,000 are set to strike in the coming months, though exact dates are yet to be announced.

Teachers Join the Revolt Over Pay

Staff in 77 sixth-form colleges across England are also striking over pay cuts. According to the National Education Union (NEU), these educators have suffered a 20% real-terms pay drop since 2010.

“Members take strike action with great reluctance, but the effects of real-terms pay losses are simply too urgent for them to endure any longer,” said NEU joint general secretary Dr Mary Bousted.

“These cuts are causing a professional exodus.”

Negotiations Stall, Strikes Ramp Up

Last week, Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT, met with Transport Secretary Mark Harper. However, talks over jobs, pay, and conditions made no headway — fuelling the growing strike wave.

Royal Mail insists it offers the best pay and conditions in the sector and urges customers to post their Christmas mail early.

The nationwide strike action is shaping up to be the largest in years — with unions set for the “biggest strike demonstration this country has ever seen” in London this Friday.
