Police Launch Massive Crackdown on ATM Heist Gang
Hundreds of officers from seven forces joined forces for a major swoop on Wednesday, 16 November 2022. The East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), working alongside Police Scotland, targeted multiple addresses across Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Nottinghamshire, Scotland, and the West Midlands.
22 Suspects Arrested in Wide-Ranging Raids
The crackdown led to 22 arrests — 16 men and six women, aged 22 to 61 — all now held in custody for questioning. Police seized a haul of stolen goods during the raids, including high-powered vehicles and parts, expensive motorhomes, stacks of cash, and two imitation firearms.
Over 40 ATM Attacks Across UK Since 2021
Investigations revealed that since March 2021, the gang carried out more than 40 attacks on ATMs across England, Wales, and Scotland. The raids caused hundreds of thousands of pounds in stolen cash and damage to buildings like Post Offices, petrol stations, and convenience stores.
EMSOU Detective Inspector Darren Brown warned: “These brazen crimes often involve smashing through walls and high-speed getaways. They risk serious injury or death. Our operation today shows how seriously we tackle organised crime and safeguard communities.”
